Why did the people have to wish for freedom in the first place?
In the past, there were many kings.
The people had to do what the kings said.
If they said anything bad about the kings, they were imprisoned.
The people did not like that.
They no longer wanted kings; they wanted to be free.

Why did the people have to wish for unity in the first place?
In the past, Germany was divided into 39 states.
The people wanted the 39 states to become one Germany.

Mr. Siebenpfeiffer was a courageous man.
He also no longer wanted a king.
He wanted freedom and unity.
The Hambach Festival was his idea.

This is a picture of Mr. Siebenpfeiffer.

Many people came to the Hambach Festival.
They came from Germany, Poland, and France.
There were men and women.
There were old people and young people.
There were rich people and poor people.

They called out loudly:
We do not want kings anymore!
We want freedom!
We want unity!
We want democracy!

Democracy is a difficult word.
Today, we live in a democracy.
In a democracy, every person is equal.
Everyone has the same rights.
Everyone can say and write what they want.

After the Hambach Festival, the king was very angry.
For the king, the people at the Hambach Festival were enemies.
Mr. Siebenpfeiffer had to go to prison.

But the people did not lose courage.
They repeatedly called out:
We do not want kings anymore!
We want freedom!
We want unity!
We want democracy!

Today, we have freedom and democracy.
That is very good for us.
Hambach Castle still exists.
In Hambach Castle, there is a Museum.
In the Museum, there are lots of things and pictures from the Hambach Festival.
In the Museum, you can dress up.
