History is fun! In an interactive and playful way, children and families immerse themselves in the world of the Hambach Festival and discover how courageous the people were at the time. As with all our programs, participation is welcomed as are the opinions of the young and young at heart.

In the workshop Up, up to the Castle! An Adventurous Trip to the 1832 Hambach Festival, history comes alive. The children are invited to don the clothes of the time and wave flags and join in the procession. After a tour through the exhibit, the practical part of the workshop looks at how they can put democracy into action. Each child gets to think about what is worth standing up for today just as the people at the Hambach Festival did. Accompanied by a drum roll, they call out their demands and discuss them together.

The adventure begins on a lovely summer day when Ben und Panthea the Cat of Hambach Castle are on a walk. Suddenly, the two young heroes end up on a fantastic trip through the two-thousand-year history of Hambach Castle from Roman times, through the Middle Ages, right up to the 1832 Hambach Festival.
The digital workshop is based on a children’s book by the same name. The author and illustrator, Petra Henke, leads the workshop and is helped by Panthea the Cat in the form of a hand puppet. In the workshop, not only are exciting stories told and pictures shown, there is also lots to do! Panthea the Cat asks herself and the children what we can learn today from the story.

There is lots of fun in store for the birthday child and their guests during the special celebration. Decked out in costumes, hats, and flags, we go on an exciting trip to the Hambach Festival. After a tour and depending on the weather, games and crafts from the 19th century are planned in the castle or on the castle grounds.
